How to make your business website eligible for ChatGPT search

Start with the part you control: accurate business information on useful pages that search crawlers can access. Eligibility is not the same as being selected for an answer, and no technical setting guarantees a recommendation.

Search access and model training are different controls

OpenAI identifies OAI-SearchBot as its search crawler. GPTBot relates to content that may be used for training. The settings are independent: a site can permit search crawling while declining training use. ChatGPT-User handles certain user-triggered visits and is not the control for automatic search inclusion.

Ask for evidence that the public page is accessible

OpenAI recommends allowing OAI-SearchBot and requests from its published IP ranges. Check hosting restrictions as well as robots rules; changing a text file does not bypass a firewall.

For a practical audit, record the public URL, response status, robots rules and indexing directives. Ask which tests used an ordinary request and which used a verified crawler address. Merely sending a crawler-like user-agent string is not proof that the real crawler can get through.

  • Use the real production URL, including its preferred hostname.
  • Check that important text and links are present without user interaction.
  • Keep authenticated drafts and customer previews private.
  • Record unresolved hosting checks instead of calling the audit complete.

Make the business understandable to a prospective customer

Our recommended content review starts with ordinary buying questions: what services are offered, where they are available, who provides them and how someone gets a quote. Put those answers on pages that visitors can navigate, not only inside an image or an interactive widget.

For Picshaw, that means distinct explanations of website redesign, local SEO and AI-search work. A contractor may instead need useful descriptions of its actual trades and coverage area. Neither business needs hundreds of near-identical pages to express the same offer.

Prefer specific evidence to confident claims

Our recommendation is to use approved work examples, accurate business details and sources for external claims. Label a concept as a concept. Where you publish results, explain what was measured and over which period.

A practical example is more useful than an unsupported claim that a business is the best in its city. An honest limitation can also help a visitor decide: the website should explain what a package excludes and what needs a separate quote.

Do not mistake a technical checklist for guaranteed exposure

Passing an access check means you have addressed that check. It does not mean an assistant will choose your business for every relevant question. Keep a separate record of observed citations, identifiable referral visits and completed enquiries.

Picshaw treats the first engagement as a diagnosis and scoped implementation. Content, distribution and measurement then continue around what the business actually needs. Start with the website you control before paying for a promise about another platform's answers.
